Here’s a move that you knew would happen at some point, but you just hate to see. While there’s been no official word at this time, the Detroit Lions appear to be parting ways with former third-round pick Tracy Walker per the safety’s Instagram.
Walker was a big part of this team when he signed a three-year $25 million extension after the 2021 season. Unfortunately an Achilles injury cost him most of his 2022 season and when he returned in 2023, he struggled and was eventually benched down the stretch of the season. Walker was made inactive during the playoffs as well.
We mentioned early in the offseason that due to Walker’s contract and the fact that he had been inactive so much lately, there was good shot that he would wind up being a cap casualty. It looks like that might be the case.
Releasing Walker would free up an extra $5.5 million in cap space for the Lions as they head into free agency in a few weeks. Walker is a player I don’t expect to sit in free agency without finding a team. He will land somewhere and be good piece wherever that is.
Update: The Lions have officially released Tracy Walker.
