The Detroit Lions‘ 2023 campaign came to an end last Sunday following their heartbreaking loss against the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game. Following the loss, the Lions quarterback Jared Goff opens up about his future in Detroit.
Jared Goff — who is entering a contract year in 2024 — addressed the media while cleaning out his locker room on Monday afternoon and was asked whether he wants to stay in Detroit long-term. Goff said he would love to stay with the Lions, but that decision is not up to him.
I’ve loved every second of my time here, and would love more. I love [head coach] Dan [Campbell], I love the coaches and all my teammates. Yeah, it would be great. But it’s not up to me.
Jared Goff told reporters
Goff has been with the Lions for three NFL seasons and has shown massive improvement year after year. In 2023, he finished his regular season campaign with 4,575 passing yards and 30 passing TDs while completing 67.3 percent of his pass attempts. He has become a beloved figure in Detroit. During their road game against the Niners, the visiting Lions fans even started a loud Jared Goff chant.
In the remarkable postseason run, Goff became the first Detroit quarterback to win multiple playoff games since Tobin Rote in 1957. In playoffs, Goff played flawless football as he completed 69.4% of his passes for 837 yards and 4 touchdowns with 0 turnovers. But he could not lead his team to the first-ever NFC championship title in the franchise’s history.
Jared Goff loves the Lions but his future in Detroit is not up to him
The Lions have a lot to figure in this off-season. One of them is whether or not to extend their quarterback Jared Goff, who will enter the final year of his deal in 2024 with a cap hit of $31.7 million.
Goff, who has flourished in Detroit while leading them to multiple playoff wins and their first division title in more than 3 decades, wants to stay with them long term. But he knows it’s not only upto him.
It’s not up to me. I love this place, and we’ll see what happens as time goes on here. But yeah, I love this place, and love Dan and all the coaches love and all my teammates. It’s out of my hands, it’s up to my representatives and obviously the people upstairs [in the front office].
Jared Goff told reporters
Now, the Lions could extend Goff to a multi-year deal potentially in the pay range of $45 million per year. Or else, they could let Goff playout his contract and could turn to their 2023 draft pick Hendon Hooker to lead their franchise in future.
