The Detroit Lions had rough day on Sunday when they went to Baltimore and got manhandled by the Ravens 38-6. One thing that was apparent in this game is that the Lions need help in a few different areas. One of those being pass rusher.
Turns out that word around the league is that the Lions are excepted to be buyers at the deadline and Carolina Panthers edge rusher Brian Burns could be in their crosshairs according to NFL insider Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports.
“One team that has been doing some work on Carolina Panthers edge Brian Burns seemed to think Detroit could be a trade rival for his services.”
Getting Burns would be a huge move for the Lions and one that says they want to compete right now. Burns is in the final year of his contract and trading for him would likely mean that they would have to be the team that sets him up with a new contract this offseason. The Lions have the means to do so and that’s probably one reason why there’s a connection here.
We’ll have to see in the next week and a half if the Lions are able to do a deal for Burns. It would be a game changing move for sure.
The article also links a receiver to the Lions as well.
“Cardinals wideout Marquise Brown is another name that came up with a line drawn to the Lions by another front office.”
I don’t really get that one, but perhaps Lions General Manager Brad Holmes is looking for more depth and Brown could be a cheap option. Brown has 29 receptions for 334 yards and three touchdowns this season.
Lastly, this wasn’t a link, but Robinson suggested that the Lions could be the only team that would make sense in a “blowout” trade offer for Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain. Robinson does note later in the piece that Surtain is the only Bronco that is more than likely not going anywhere and that the Broncos probably wouldn’t even begin to listen to an offer unless it contained two first-round picks.
We’ll keep an eye on this stuff and update you if anything new comes out or if one of these trades are made.
