Lions quarterback Jared Goff has a solid track record vs. Packers

SideLion Report

He hasn’t played against them a lot, but Lions quarterback Jared Goff has had some success against the Green Bay Packers in his career.

Having spent most of his career with the Los Angeles Rams, Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff hasn’t played against the Green Bay Packers a lot in his career. Sunday’s game will be his third start against them in a season-and-a-half in Detroit.

Goff has made three regular season starts against the Rams in his career, with one playoff start in what turned out to be his final game as a Ram.

Week 8, 2018: 19-for-35, 295 yards, three touchdowns, 111.0 passer rating
Week 2, 2021: 26-for-36, 246 yards, two touchdowns, one interception, 97.7 passer rating
Week 18, 2021: 21-for-30, 238 yards, two touchdowns, 115.7 passer rating

Total: 65.3 percent completion rate, seven touchdowns, one interception, 107.7 passer rating

In the aforementioned playoff start and final game with the Rams, on Jan. 16, 2021, Goff went 21-for-27 for 174 yards with a touchdown and zero interceptions (105.9 passer rating) in a 32-18 Divisional Round loss to Green Bay. The Rams allowed 484 yards of offense to the Packers in the game, as Green Bay also possessed the ball for just over 36 minutes.

So the loss was not on Goff, but the situation was not one he could will his team to overcome–which is basically the template for his career. It also stands the final confirmation for the Rams that they needed a talent upgrade under center if they wanted to win a Super Bowl. A few weeks later, unofficially until the league year started, they of course struck the deal with the Lions for Matthew Stafford.

Jared Goff should, at minimum, be confident against the Packers

At home against a team he has had success against, Goff should be a pretty confident quarterback on Sunday against the Packers.  Of course “should” doesn’t always mean “will be” when it comes to the Lions’ signal caller. But while the matchup is tough for him, it’s hardly one he can’t outperform expectations in.
