Detroit Lions waive QB Steven Montez, 5 others ahead of rookie minicamp

The Detroit Lions waived fourth-string quarterback Steven Montez on Wednesday to free up roster space ahead of this weekend’s rookie minicamp.

Montez joined the Lions practice squad last September after backup quarterback Tim Boyle broke his thumb in the preseason. He did not appear in a game.

The Lions have cut six players since Tuesday to create room for their undrafted rookie class.

Along with Montez, the Lions waived linebackers Tavante Beckett and Rashod Berry, cornerback Parnell Motley and tight end Matt Sokol on Tuesday. Tight end Jared Pinkney also was waived with an injury settlement.

The Lions currently have 81 players on their 90-man roster and are expected to sign an undrafted free agent class that includes TCU offensive tackle Ebinna Oze, Michigan State lineman Kevin Jarvis and San Jose State tight end Derrick Deese.

Rookie minicamp runs Friday-Sunday in Allen Park.
